SERDANG, August 31 - The Great Hall, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Arts & Cultural Centre (PKKSSAAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), was filled with campus members and surrounding community in Serdang to celebrate the 66th Independence Day with great patriotism last night.

UPM Vice Chancellor, Dato’ Prof. Dr. Mohd Roslan Sulaiman, expressed his joy upon seeing UPM members and their families enthusiastically gathered as early as 8 p.m. to celebrate the eve of the 66th Independence Day.

"I am excited to see the UPM Great Hall almost full of UPM staff and students. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate and commemorate this historic moment for our nation," he said.

The 2023 National Day Eve celebration at UPM featured various programmes, including patriotic song performances, local puppet-shadow plays (wayang kulit), and poetry readings to instil patriotism and love for the homeland.

The parade with the waving of Jalur Gemilang by the Auxiliary Police Security Service Centre (APSeC) was the main attraction for visitors, along with the countdown to midnight.

The seven times shout-out of "Merdeka" (Independence) by the UPM Vice Chancellor was echoed enthusiastically by all the attendees in the UPM Great Hall, followed by the singing of Negaraku.

The celebration ended with the recitation of the Rukun Negara led by the Yang Dipertua (YDP) of the UPM Student Representative Council (MPP), Fatin Amirah Mohd Hisham, and the singing of patriotic Malaysian songs. - UPM
